i watched The New Adventures of the Old Christina last night. it's Julia Louis-Dreyfus' new show that supposed to rid her of "the curse" of Seinfeld -- show the world that she's something other than Elaine Benes. sfgate.com had an enormous article on their homepage about the show, proclaiming it to be "material to match her talent", or some such thing. despite my repeated run-ins with critics and their unbelievably poor judgment of good art, i had to tape it.
and it sucks.
an awful canned laugh track. predictable, formulaic writing. pretty subpar acting. uh ... dumb jokes. (i laughed a handful of times and only then because i really wanted Julia to succeed.) took the show right off the recording list.
it's too bad because i think Julia is hilarious with some really excellent comic timing. and, given the pictures in the Chronicle, she's still looking hotter than ever. (which should have no baring on the woman's quality as an actress and a comedienne ... but still.) but this show is a terrible dud. don't believe that it's "extremely funny", "able to saunter out and be good immediately", "relatable and interesting and funny (even sexy and vulnerable, bitter and adorable)", or "finally meshes smart writing with Louis-Dreyfus' superb physical comedy".
lies, all lies.
i'm listening to baseball!
